SAME RECIPE.
SAME FAMILY.
SAME PROPER CHIPS.

Scarborough's chippy on the corner, run by the Hartley family since 1972. Fresh fish off the boats, hand-cut spuds, fried in beef dripping the proper way. Nowt fancy. Just done right.

How we do it

FIVE THINGS WE WON'T BUDGE ON

01
Off the Boats

Cod, haddock & rock landed at Scarborough Harbour that morning. If it didn't swim today, it's not on the board.

02
Beef Dripping

Fried in proper beef dripping, the Yorkshire way. Gluten-free batter available — just ask.

03
Maris Piper

Hand-cut chips from Maris Pipers. Peeled out back, never out of a bag.

04
Mushy Peas

Marrowfat peas, slow-soaked overnight. Scraps on the house if you ask nicely.

05
Pre-order

Ring ahead. We'll wrap it ready, hot and waiting. No queueing, no faffing.

Our Story

THREE GENERATIONS.
ONE RECIPE.

Albert Hartley opened the shop on Castle Road in 1972 — a tiled front, a single fryer, and a queue down the pavement by Friday teatime. He'd been a deckhand on the Scarborough trawlers before that, which is why the fish has always come straight off the boats and never a day older.

Now it's his grandson Joe behind the counter, with Albert's daughter Sue still on the till most days. Same recipe in the batter, same Maris Pipers, same beef dripping. We've had three coats of paint and a new fryer in 2018. That's about it.

We're MSC certified, recognised by The Times Best Chippies guide in 2023, and we still close on Mondays so Sue can do the books.

What the regulars say

Two minutes from North Bay beach, ten from the castle. Ring ahead if you want it ready to walk away with — the queue's part of the fun but nobody minds skipping it.
